IP and IK Rating
The IP Code, International Protection Marking, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures. It is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The equivalent European standard is EN 60529.
Note: the IP rate shouldn’t be mixed up with the IP protocol!
The IK Rating is an international numeric classification for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts. It provides a means of specifying the capacity of an enclosure to protect its contents from external impacts. The IK Rating was originally defined in European Standard BS EN 50102 (1995, amended 1998). Following its adoption as an international standard in 2002, the European standard was renumbered EN 62262.

Explanation of IP Codes:
-
IP20 Protected against the ingress of solid foreign objects with a size > 12.5mm or accessing hazardous electrical parts, e.g. fingers or similar sized objects. No protection against liquid ingress protection.
-
IP30 Protected against the ingress of solid foreign objects with a size > 2.5mm or accessing hazardous electrical parts, e.g. with tools, thick wires or similar. No protection against liquid ingress protection.
-
IP65 Protected against the ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction has no harmful effects.
-
IP66 Protected against the ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction has no harmful effects.
-
IP68 Protected against the ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which is specified by the manufacturer (usually >= 1m water depth)
Note: MOBOTIX cameras do not have NEMA certification.
Explanation of IK Ratings:
IK Rating | impact energy (joule) | material of striking element | size of striking element (radius in mm) | mass (kg) |
---|---|---|---|---|
IK06 | 1 | polyamide | 10 | 0.5 |
IK07 | 2 | steel | 25 | 0.5 |
IK08 | 2 | steel | 25 | 1.7 |
IK09 | 10 | steel | 50 | 5 |
IK10 | 20 | steel | 50 | 5 |
IK10+ and IK10++ Those devices are exceeding the IK10 rating test normatives.
