Camera model recommendations

Hi everyone!

We plan to install around ten CCTV cameras at various locations within our company. Following successful trials with a Mobotix M22 camera that was loaned to us, we have decided to go with Mobotix for the cameras in our system.

We would like to be able to save the videos to a Synology NAS and, most importantly, to be able to set up Obscure Areas, as is already possible on the M22 model, for legal reasons.

We had initially opted for the MOVE range, but several forum posts mention that recording and viewing recordings work differently from other ranges if you use a NAS other than the one provided by MOBOTIX. We have also come across the MOBOTIX ONE range and the MOBOTIX v71B.

Which range or camera would you recommend to minimise any potential issues we might encounter?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi William,

Based on what you’ve described, I would recommend taking a closer look at the MOBOTIX ONE series.

Since you’ve already had a positive experience with the M22, the ONE is probably the closest equivalent in terms of philosophy and system architecture—just built on a completely new hardware and software generation.

It is actually quite remarkable that the M22, introduced around 2005/2006, is still in operation today. That longevity is something MOBOTIX has always been known for, and the ONE continues this design approach.

Compared to the M22, the MOBOTIX ONE offers improvements across the board:

  • Higher image resolution and significantly improved overall image quality
  • Much better low-light and night-time performance
  • Higher environmental protection rating
  • Support for larger SD card capacities
  • Modern hardware platform while maintaining the decentralized MOBOTIX concept

One of the key advantages that remains unchanged is the decentralized architecture. The camera can record directly to a standard NAS (including Synology) without requiring a dedicated recorder, while the integrated SD card can serve as a reliable recording buffer or backup in case of a network interruption.

Power consumption also remains very efficient at around 7 W via standard PoE, despite the significant increase in performance.

Another feature worth highlighting is the MOBOTIX ActivitySensor ONE. Unlike simple motion detection based on pixel changes, it is an onboard analytics application that reliably detects and classifies moving objects such as people and vehicles. Because the analysis runs directly inside the camera, it delivers very low false alarm rates, even in challenging outdoor environments where shadows, rain, vegetation or changing light conditions often cause conventional motion detection to trigger unnecessary events. This makes it a highly reliable solution for event-based recording and notifications without the need for additional servers or cloud services.

Another aspect that often goes unnoticed is reliability. In electronics, a common engineering rule of thumb is that every 10°C increase in operating temperature significantly reduces component lifetime. Thermal management has always been an important design principle at MOBOTIX—from the M22 to today’s ONE platform—and the long service life of many installed M22 cameras speaks for itself.

One additional point worth mentioning is the SD card concept. Since the M22 generation, MOBOTIX IoT cameras have shipped with industrial-grade SD cards pre-installed as standard. This may sound like a small detail, but in practice it makes a big difference. Many manufacturers recommend using SD cards for edge recording but leave the selection and installation to the customer. With MOBOTIX, the storage solution is integrated, tested and ready to use from day one.

Regarding your legal requirement for privacy masking (Obscure Areas), the MOBOTIX ONE continues to support these privacy features, making it well suited for installations where compliance is important.

Unless you specifically need features unique to another product family, I think the MOBOTIX ONE is the most natural successor to the M22 and should provide the smoothest migration while preserving the decentralized recording concept you’ve already tested successfully.

Hope this helps!

Bye Jörg

I recommend hiring a professional. I have been working with Mobotix as a reseller and installer since 2011. I suppose you think you can find all the information using AI!!!

Hi GORKA,

You could have stopped before the bit about AI, but you didn’t.
I thought I’d get some constructive answers and help by posting on this forum, but it seems I was wrong.

In response to your comment, I actually posted here precisely so that I wouldn’t have to ask AI, and because I’ve spent a lot of time reading the documentation, watching videos and doing my own research, as this is a new topic for me.

It’s a shame, because now I’m even less inclined to use a professional if it means having to deal with someone like you.

Have a good evening

Hi William,

we are since more than 25 yrs. a Mobotix Diamond-Partner and have setup of projects worldwide.

Not only do we believe in the Mobotix products - no, we also are not willig to make anymore compromises concerning security and price discussions…

We really can confirm the explanations from Jörg an suggest to use the new Mobotix M-ONE cameras.

Have a look in the internet, check the Mobotix website and make a “good” decision.

Life is to short to go for second place, right?

Best Regards from Stuttgart (Germany)

Since I don’t know if you speak German, here’s the English version.

I mistakenly thought the forum was intended to help users stuck in certain configurations or experiencing problems, assistance to which I contributed. I see now that the focus seems to be on replacing the installer with this forum!
